Blogging, experience since 2002
Wrote for Global voices, IPS, Knack, MO*, One World, ...
Willemjan Vandenplas has been experimenting with journalism since 2002 when he was a member of the secondary school newspaper 'De geruchten'.
After 2005, he had his first writing experience, this was for Intal and later for Indymedia.be. For them it was about Argentina and Latin America with a first page article during his medical studies.
From 2011 on he switched to mo.be as a world blogger about Haïti and photo essayist when he went abroad. He also wrote for several NGO's like; FOS, 11.11.11., Pax Christi, Broederlijkdelen, Vlaams Haiti Overleg and Congoforum.be. After some time he continued only for mo.be.
After 2013 he started writing opinion article's about Syria for Knack.be, the main political magazine in Belgium.
In 2014 he started a two year project about the 'Enfants Sorciers' in Congo, which he published as a long read on mo*.
And in January 2015 he published an extensive dossier on mo.be about the revival of the Syrio-Lebanese community in Latin America, with the case study of São Paulo. Which was republished on Consentido.nl and Oneworld.nl. In the summer of 2015 he wrote about several subjects in Brazil, mostly article's for the organizations that gave him photography assignments earlier that year. In september an article was published on IPS.be
In 2016, he continued his world blog on Mo.be about the relations between Syria and Brazil, he also wrote article's about Brazilian books he read and about a different subject in Argentina.
In 2017 he kept a blog about the Syrian refugees in São Paulo and his experiences in the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro on mo.be. He also wrote a big review of his work for the Dutch Latin American specialist magazine; Lachispa.eu, about the Syrians in Brazil. He also started writing for Brusselblogt.be, the city blog of Brussels. The goal is to write about my experiences in Brussels after all my time in São Paulo.
In May 2017, he became a contributor for Globalvoices.org (English) and his article was republished and translated into several languages. And in november 2017, he started publishing for the Brazilieforum 2.0 on the Brazilforum.nl, this was mostly older work with some update's.
In the beginning of 2018, he started publishing in French for bxlblogt.be, beginning 2018 he started writing a book: 'Dagboek van een Wereldburger'. Which was published in Dutch at the end of the year 2018 and printed by Bitbook, and it's now for sale at bol.com, or bitbook.be, or de standaardboekhandel.
In 2018, he started writing at medium.com and later in march 2020, he republished his article's on Dewereldmorgen.be. He kept on blogging for De Wereld Morgen, an online newspaper based on civil journalism.
In the end of 2020 the promotors of his book gave him the idea to become a reviewer in the Netherlands, and ever since he has been applying his knowledge of social media and political sciences to write non-fiction reviews. He writes for Dewereldmorgen.be, Brusselblogt.be and Consentido.nl
