From Arabic Medical Translator to Arabic Genitor...
Had a break of one night after my 40h shift. Things changed a bit, the families went to the WTC-Building to sleep. So we lost 300 refugees in the Brussels Refugee Camp. The Refugee camp is every day more regarded like a theme park for children. And maybe this is better and this is also the raison why it should exist.
Some relations with the high politics and media.
I started the evening with 2 assignments; one for Pro Velo and one for the Aid Sector and the newspapers. I talked to Herman Vanrompuy, ex-president of the EU at the debate of the Aid Sector. He was interested in the situation in the Camp. His main concern was about the fights in the Camp. I have to say honestly I only heard one fight and they told me it was externally based. And I saw one person who was stealing in 4 days. Both of the cases were told to be externally. Then I talked to the head of MO* magazine. He told me that the NGO's would leave this weekend. Which is not correct and impossible. There is a good reason for this, because there is only one NGO really active here and thats MdM, where I volunteer for. The others Samu Social is government based, they told me. And caritas is not active here directly and The tents of MdM are only of Doctors Without Borders. So They are also not really active here. Refugee Action Flanders I never saw at night.
From Doc to Genitor...
Tonight I really felt like a guard of the medical facilities. We just saw one patient and he wasn't even staying in the Camp. I was also busy editing my pictures of my assignment. The Wifi here is better then at my home. I never had such fast Wifi, sending was pretty easy and didn't take a lot of time. I could listen to music a bit while working, so it feld like home. If médecin du monde need a genitor I can do this. There is always somebody at the fieldhospital, but Its a bit strange all these meds stay unprotected during the night. I am not in for a fight at night just to protect the meds from some kind of drug addict who needs his drugs. I thing also that since the guards don't do rounds anymore the camp is becoming unsafe to leave al this stuff in the public space. Its so easy to steal something here.
The moral is back with the volunteers of the Camp. The security is slowly being taken over by blond women and the refugees them self. Tonight we ate a some croissants, given by an Iranian baker. Amazing, actually these things are for the refugees. For once I didn't feel bad since I am working here 10 hours for free so why not a small treat and get to now some other volunteers...
Reflections of the future of the Camp
I think its better that the families go to the WTC tower, but I also thing the refugees of my age should stay here, during the night. We are giving them the first passes to integration. For them is the most difficult part, because they lost the possibility to study. And will have to work without degrees. I feel with them since I only have a bachelors in Medicine and this doesn't really gives a job. So I try to survive with photography. I really want to start project with these refugees here. Some of the volunteer refugees come from refugee centers to help here. Its just great how youth from Belgium and from Syria and Iraq is working together and keeping this camp together at night. We are a problematic youth, not of drugs or criminality. Just the hand of capitalism tooks us in the wrong place. So why have been living for a long time without perspective and future. This is like the big playground to build a network to work at the future.
During the day we should make a playground here for the little children. Who come out of the WTC buildings. All these people who exagerate about this camp. This place should be a theme park for the children during the day. And at night an integration center for the young adults. I already heard that some here worked at private guards. Also a lot of the muslims come and search here for a wife.
What do I mean with a theme park. Not in the strict sence of a popular theme park. This should be an educational theme park for the kids. At the moment they are on the verge and at these moments the young vocations start. DmD know this and I think they are hoping that the will find future volunteers here or even that they study medicine in Belgium to start MENA projects. Also the university of Brussels tries to get a grip on the field hospital because its the beginning of the academic year so the want to make publicity and they need students so here is a fresh market who opens. I never even toughed the universities would come and make publicity at this place. Probebly they are just screening for talent.
Why a male with medical translator?
I still don't get it why they accepted me. What is the point of a white male arabic translator. I am only needed for the sheikhs in Snit-Elisabeth and then even I am not good enough because they need somebody with blue eyes and blond hair. Maybe its better I keep taking pictures.
So this is how it feels again to be unemployed, nothing to do, my shift is over and my blog is written.
