Well kick me out!?
The night was calm and rainy, I ended up as the last man standing after 35h awake... So I felt like a soldier on sugar and I did a patrol of the camp, because everybody was sleeping. The over excitement was a bit gone with a lot of people. Time for a reality check.
The third day started a bit strange I introduced my self to the payed responsible of the Clinic and she said: Your work is very useful. I found the moment to do a suggestion. Since we see only small cases of a cold during the night and do mainly talks. I proposed to suggest patients to go to sleep and make them come back the next day. The responsible told me very frankly: 'These people are traumatized let them do what they want we can't give them a sleeping pill an make them go to sleep'. I got a bit upset, since I am doing everything here for this voluntary assignment, I invest a lot of time in this and then the people who are responsible make you feel like a complete asshole. Like the morrocan girl who just heard me speak and told me: You still maintained your flemish sarcasm in Arabic.
No diggedi, then a few hours later she came back on her knees and first I tough it was to exuse her. I was already 24 hours awake and then she asked me to volunteer two more hours until 8, because they had nobody. Like hell I couldn't say no, so I made a big mistake later would become clear.
We started the evening we an urgency and 3 small infectious diseases. Easy to translate. Although I had the impression the nurses where checking on me, because like always western people don't believe I don't I speak arabic. Which will be killing me for the rest of my life.
There was an emergency doctor Serge, we formed a good time, an amazing guy. We where on the same level of thinking. The two of us did great work while the professor from the VUB was sleeping and only came out for the emergency. Although he was a physiotherapist, he told me he had a lot experience from the hospital so he could do the emergency. The same day I had asked the responsible of the volunteers if I sometimes could take the parameters, he said no because 4 years of medecine is not enough. This means I can't even take the temperature of people, no blood pressure or sugar values or put a stick in a urine bowl, quite frustrating when you see these so called over experienced people do the whole job, with out even one year of medicine, but yeah they are professor at the VUB, without a doctorate and at the end just a teachers assistant, but they work in the hospital. So case closed or not?
Everybody wants to sleep and I stay up all night. Went talking a lot to a Syrian-Belgian guy and a moroccan lady at the info space. Nice people they are working hard since a long time and keep their motivation. The real hero of the camp, while they complain the irregular volunteers are really annoying, because they are so arrogant. After 3 days I know what they mean.
After listening to some Legiao Urbana and Appa, the camp was waking up and the dayshift was coming in. I felt emmediatly the warmt of the people of the day shift. But it was so over when things got to frustration of the payed job. The four responsibles are quite commical carracters, they take the aura of Gods against the shitty volunteers like me who actually do the work.
Then the so called professor made me take a picture with his camera of him with the student, because he is also a photographer... The camera was so hobby, like Hobby, with H, big H of Hobby. The picture was for the rector of the VUB. Then the VRT came in. The guy of the Radio asked like everybody in a terrible french accent: Esqqe illlee yyyy aaa qqulkun ki pale Nelandaise? The monkey professor stoot up like a king and went to the logical payed guy. Who does the media always, like the official press officer is unemployed... I met this guy actually once at a birthday party somewhere. He recalled , I didn't recall the Birthday Party, now I do...
Then I just exploded with the indifference these people work there the monkey and the logistical... its like since they don't know the language of these people, they don't care and are just pumped up with the me media communication... Medecin du monde is just a child based and kindergarden organization. But yeah I like the work and will have to live with that...
